How to Make a Paper Mache Tree

Are you looking for a realistic tree prop for your next photo shoot or theater production?

I created a life-sized tree using paper mache, and it is one of the coolest props I’ve made. It turned out beautifully despite the messy process. The liquid paste used in paper mache creates a fabulous texture for the tree, making it perfect for any nature-themed setting.

This is a generic how to as there are a lot of variables in the creation. When making my tree I was able to utilize many scraps we had on hand, but everything, except the mesh ribbon, can be purchased at a home improvement store. If you don’t have a way to cut the wood, ask an employee at the store to cut it for you.

ASSEMBLE BASE:
Use photo as a guide

  1. Attach both 2″x10″x13″ boards to either side of 2″x10″x28″ board to create a sturdy stand in the shape of an X.
  2. Attach 2″x4″x78″ board to the X shaped stand.
  3. Attach 1″x4″ boards up the base. Place the 20″ long boards towards the bottom, 18″ long boards in the middle, and 16″ long boards at the top.

WRAP IN CHICKEN WIRE

Wrap chicken wire around the wooden base. Use wire cutters to cut to size. Connect the raw edges by folding the wire around the opposing wire. Use a staple gun to attach chicken wire to the ends of the 1″x4″s.

*Chicken wire is sharp, so be careful. Wearing gloves is a good idea.

PAPER MACHE THE TREE

  1. Tear lots of newspaper strips. I had a commercial grade brown paper towel roll on hand, so I used that instead of newspaper.
  2. Make paper mache paste from a mix of 1 part flour to 2 parts warm water. Mix until combined, getting rid of the lumps. You’ll need a bunch.
  3. Dip a newspaper strip in the paste, gently squeeze off excess paste, and press onto the mesh ribbon. Continue until the entire tree is covered.
  4. After the 1st layer dries, paper mache another layer around the tree.
  5. Let layer 2 dry and then create a layer 3.
  6. Let dry.

I used the tree primarily in my Spooktacular Forest staged set for a couple years.
